The JCC – A Place to Play

Beat Cancer Boot Camp Comes to the JCC
Beat Cancer Boot Camp is an exercise support group designed for all cancer survivors and the people who care about them. Beat Cancer Boot Camp is not just for survivors. Sign up with a fitness buddy, someone who provides extra motivation to keep you focused on your goals.

In order to help cancer survivors face the challenges that lie ahead, Beat Cancer Boot Camp is designed to condition your mind and body for healing. The group sessions include a variety of exercises that are effective and challenging. Workouts are geared for all fitness levels as you move through various stages of cancer treatment and recovery. Regular exercise can give you the mental edge and self-esteem you’ll need to take charge of your health, reconnect with your mind and body through fitness to stay strong.

This outdoor military-style class is based on the Navy Seals training. We use hand weights, dynabands, and various outdoor surroundings for the workout. Please dress comfortable for the outdoor elements. Bring a water bottle, and either a towel or mat. Exercises can be modified to suit all fitness levels.

Beat Cancer Boot Camp has raised money for various cancer programs. These activities allow survivors to give back to the community and help others as they have been helped. Since its inception, the program has served more than 650 participants.

Classes run in eight-week sessions and begin in January. You may sign up for one or both. Tuesdays 9-10 a.m. • Thursdays 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Introductory rates! Prices are for the entire 8-week session: JCC members-$35 1x/week • $60 2x/week • Non-members-$55 1x/week • $80 2x/week

Anita Kellman, R.T. (R.M.), has worked in the medical field for 25 years and is a clinical liaison for patients undergoing biopsies and other procedures. Through her work, she meets cancer survivors every day in various stages of treatment and recovery and most of them are looking for a way to cope more effectively. Beginning in 2001, Anita attended boot camp classes and learned Navy Seal exercises, and in 2004 she adapted these techniques to start an intensive support group built around physical fitness instead of having an attitude of “woe is me.” Anita is currently studying to receive her American College of Sports Medicine personal training certification and she’s recognized throughout the Tucson community for her contribution to cancer awareness and women’s health.

The benefits of exercise are many. When you begin to feel better, you function more efficiently resulting in added confidence and a feeling of well-being that carries over into every aspect of your daily life. Everyone begins a fitness program for different reasons. Some people are interested specifically in weight loss; others want to maintain their health. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that adults get an accumulated 30 minutes or more of simple physical activity most, if not all days of the week. For fitness benefits, according to the ACSM, adults should do 20 to 60 minutes of continuous aerobic activity, three to five days a week at 60 percent to 90 percent maximum heart rate using the major muscle groups (swimming or aerobics are good ways to accomplish this).

We provide you with many choices of how you can work out. Here is a list of some of the amenities the JCC offers:

Fitness Center Request
Your visit to the JCC cannot be complete without a visit to our State of the Art Fitness Center. Each day hundreds of members start or finish their day off with a vigorous workout on our many machines in the center. The treadmills, bicycles, elliptical machines, strength machines and free weights are constantly in use. Because we want everyone to have the opportunity to use our machines, we ask members to sign in on the big board when you use a machine. There is a 30-minute time limit when the room is busy. In order for our staff to keep track of all the use, we need you to put the start time of your workout on the machine. We appreciate your cooperation. Please help us out by SIGNING IN. Thank you!
