Infant/Toddler Care & Education

The J’s Early Childhood Education program is one of the few programs in Tucson welcoming children as young as six weeks. We reference the Arizona Infant and Toddler Guidelines, recognizing that young children need enriching experiences.  Measurable expectations of what children show, know and do in different domains of learning, support our teachers to provide the best infant/toddler care and education.

Infant Care & Education

Infants and their families find a “home away from home” in one of our three infant rooms with dedicated staff.  Not only does the staff provide nurturing and meet the needs of your child, our staff is well-aware of the amazing learning that is happening as their young brain develops.  Relationships are the key to healthy children and our teachers spend a great deal of time building a healthy, nurturing relationship with each infant and his/her family.   Teachers use moments of care and play to share language, encourage self-regulating behaviors and build new skills.

Toddler Care & Education

Children between 12 and 24 months join our Toddler program and enjoy increased activities and independence.  Our four Toddler classrooms have a schedule that helps children anticipate activities and draw comfort from routine.  In addition, they are treated to increased participation in the greater ECE with a more focused program of specialists – music, cooking and fitness.  During the summer our older toddlers enjoy beginning swimming lessons to gain comfort with the water.

Offering Infant Swimming Resources (ISR): Lessons Starting at 6 Months

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) – Self-Rescue ™ Lessons
ISR is the safest provider of infant and toddler survival swimming lessons worldwide. With more than 40 years of research and development behind ISR’s Self-Rescue™ program, ISR teaches each child survival skills in conjunction with basic swimming lessons that give them the competence required to safely enjoy the water. 4-6 week course, scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day. With a focus on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons by certified Instructors, ISR’s survival swimming lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations, and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the industry. Children may begin lessons at 6 months of age until 6 years of age.

Lessons for a 6-12 month old: focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives.

Lessons for children 1-6 years old: focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued.

Once the children are fully skilled they will practice ISR’s survival techniques fully clothed during lessons. It is recommended that children complete refresher lessons to help their in-water skill level grow with their physical development.

Empower your child by enrolling them in ISR’s Self-Rescue™ program. For more information, contact Brandon Rannebarger at 520.299.3000 x161 or brannebarger@tucsonjcc.org.
