Walk a Mile in a Refugee’s Shoes
March 18 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Join Mayor Rothchild in the Sculpture Garden at the Tucson Jewish Community Center for this moving event.
Today, more than 65 million people are displaced around the world. The International Rescue Committee in Tucson invites you to participate in the “Walk a Mile in a Refugee’s Shoes” simulation event. In partnership with the Jewish Community Center, this event will provide the community an insight into the hardships, frustrations, and often the pain that refugees endure. Participants will go through various stations and will assume the role of a refugee and focus on the challenges that they face in getting the bare necessities of life—food, water, shelter, and education. Registration starts at 9:30AM and the commencement ceremony will begin from 10:00am to 10:30AM.
Families with children, of all ages, are welcome to attend. Please be prepared to have real and honest conversations with your children about what it is that they are experiencing. We encourage all participants to debrief after the simulation – share and talk about your experiences.
As this is an outdoor event, we recommend wearing sunscreen and comfortable clothing and shoes. This event will take place come rain or shine. Food and drinks are available on sale at the JCC café.
Suggested donation of $10.00 at the door.
