New! Basic Watercolor Techniques

Create your own watercolor paintings and gain a better understanding of color and how to paint with watercolors, while exploring Jewish themes.  Ann Marcus Lapidus has been teaching art in Tucson for over 20 years and has taught at numerous venues including the Tucson Museum of Art, Temple Emanu-el Religious School and Canyon Ranch.  She has a BA in Fine Art from Pomona College, CA and a semestrial degree from the Sorbonne, Paris. Students are responsible for their own supplies; an optional supply list will be provided. Beginners are welcome!

New! Color Meditations – Silk Painting

Add a splash of color to your summer with this playful silk painting course! The ancient art of silk painting uses resist to guide vibrant, flowing dyes across fabric. In this class, we will use vinegar-based dyes to create expressive 4×4 inch silk paintings mounted on canvas. We will experiment with color combinations and use salt to create comet-burst effects. This class is suitable for any level of artistic ability. A $20 material fee will be due on the first day of class. All materials provided.

New! Learn To Paint a Silk Scarf
Sundays, November 4, 11, and 18, 9am-12pm

Paint your own silk scarf using vibrant, flowing dyes! We will use water-soluble resist to draw lines that fence in color and salt to create comet-like patterns. Returning participants will learn to make colored resist lines and achieve higher levels of detail. All levels welcome. You need not consider yourself an “artist.” Participants will have the option to make abstract or representational images on their scarf. Material fee is $20 and due on first day of class.

Would you like to paint portraits of your family, or sketch strangers while you travel?  Discover the joy of portraiture and dispel the myth that it is harder than other subjects.  You will learn: proportions, how to render features, how to create soft, believable hair, improve your drawing skills, how to mix skin tones, and overall painting skills.  Gain the confidence to paint and draw any person you choose!

In this clay class, we will explore a variety of surface and decorating techniques. Alter thrown forms. Add texture to handbuilt pieces. Carve into greenware. Draw and paint on bisqueware. Experiment and have fun. All levels of experience welcome.

Beginner Portrait Sculpting

Fridays, 2 – 5 pm

This is a comprehensive class of practical instruction and hands-on sculpting in how to create a three-dimensional sculpture of the human face and head in clay. You will create and sculpt a generic portrait in clay. In these classes, you will learn the bones and anatomy of the face; how to correctly block in the human face; how to use variation in forms to create “movement”; how to use relative comparison to make features the correct size, and how train your eyes to recognize natural shapes and sharp/ soft transitions. Raymonde Zlotnikoff is an award winning international figurative sculptor who works and exhibits in both France and the United States. A $30 materials fee will be due on the first day of class.

Tiles with Style

Make colorful mosaic tiles of varied shapes and sizes, and use them to fill a wall niche, to make wall decorations or a sculptural tile for your garden, or to cover a table or backsplash. Learn techniques for writing on tiles with fluid glazing or carving. No previous clay experience necessary, all skill levels welcome. Six, two-hour sessions with Instructor Gerrie Young.

New! Floral Arranging and Design

Learn how to create beautiful floral arrangements for events, clients, friends and family with tips and techniques from Jerri Fortunato, the J’s Rental and Events Coordinator.  This six week course will take you through everything from setting up your tool box to creating a hand tied bouquet at one of Tucson’s premier floral shops.  No supplies are included in this class.  A list of supplies will be sent to you upon registration.  A limited amount of supplies will be available to purchase at each class.  Please bring a $20 fee for a starter supply kit.

This workshop is a continuation of Jerri’s floral and design class.  Each week will feature a basic project to advance your skills and grow your confidence.  Successful completion of the basic floral arrangement and design class is required.  Join your friends and grow your network while creating stunning works that will be the envy of your friends.  No supplies are included in this workshop.  Supplies will be available to order or purchase at each workshop.
