New! Introduction to Mandarin


Tuesdays, September 12 – October 17, 9 – 10:15 am
In collaboration with the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, students will begin to learn basic conversational Mandarin: vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and about traditional Chinese culture. The curriculum is especially tailored for students whose first language is English.

New! Beginner French


Tuesdays, October 17 – November 21, 6 – 8 pm
In collaboration with the Alliance Française de Tucson, learn French from the very beginning! This class will work to quickly increase your ability to communicate in French. We will focus mainly on speaking and listening comprehension, with some reading and writing as well. In this six-week class, you will learn foundational skills such as introducing yourself, exchanging basic personal information, knowing which form of address to use with others (tu versus vous), numbers, the alphabet, units of time, and more. Have fun learning or refreshing basic French language skills with teachers who are skilled in and passionate about the language. Course fee includes membership to the Alliance Française de Tucson.
$165 plus a one-time, $60 purchase of textbook, workbook and CD, Latitudes.

Hebrew at The J!

Beginner Hebrew

Advanced Hebrew

Learn this ancient yet modern language from a native Hebrew speaker, Sara Golan-Mussman. This six-week course will focus on conversation, grammar, and Israeli culture for students who have prior knowledge of Hebrew reading and writing.

Spanish at The J!

Beginners I

Session 2: November 8 – December 13
Designed for students with a little more experience and background in simple Spanish.  Practice what you have learned in previous courses and expand your vocabulary, grammar and ability to communicate. In this section we will put together some beginner readings in Spanish to help you practice what you have learned so far.  Previous knowledge: Ser/Estar, present tense of regular and irregular verbs.

Basic Conversational Spanish

This course is for advanced beginners and low intermediate student who mainly want to focus on conversational Spanish with almost no grammar, but lots of vocabulary, audio, videos, pictures, flash cards and games. Conversación Práctica y español avanzado

Esta clase es para aquellos quienes ya saben y quieren practicar más español. Mejoraremos la pronunciación, redacción y formas de expresión. Hablaremos de temas actuales, participaremos en actividades y juegos divertidos y creativos. This course is for students who can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions in different every day topics. There will be an emphasis in conversation and writing, strengthened and expanded by more complex verb forms, including the present and past subjunctive, vocabulary and grammar. Students will be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without too much difficulty.

Introduction to Spanish I

A continuation of Intro for those students who have already been introduced to the structure and usage of nouns, verbs, simple sentences and the verb “estar”.  Students will gain confidence in their ability to learn a second language; will be prepared for further Spanish language instruction by gaining sufficient vocabulary to form simple sentence.
