The Tucson J offers language classes in Spanish, Hebrew, Mandarin, Italian, and French that delve into language acquisition, literature, and cultural studies. Explore the world at The J! Please note: no refunds once the class has begun.

Beginner Hebrew
Thursdays, 2-3 pm

Yes – even you can learn to read, write and speak Hebrew. Individual attention at a relaxed pace. Six, one-hour classes designed for those at the beginner level.

Advanced Hebrew
Thursdays, 3-4 pm

Learn this ancient yet modern language from a native Hebrew speaker, Sara Golan-Mussman. This six-week course will focus on conversation, grammar, and Israeli culture for students who have prior knowledge of Hebrew reading and writing.

Beginner Italian

Tuesdays, September 25-October 23, 6-8pm
Creator of “Tucson Italian,” Theresa Levy, Ph.D. always offers a fun and useful approach to learning the Italian language. Levy has more than 25 years of experience teaching Italian privately, as well having taught Italian for nine years at the University of Arizona, and at Pima Community College.

New! INTERMEDIATE FRENCH CONVERSATION

Wednesdays, September 26-October 31, 6 – 7:30 pm
In the French Conversation class for Intermediate Students you will enjoy sharing stories, discussions, opinions about all sorts of topics. Hand-outs can be provided, and you are welcome to bring your own articles or documents in French. Stories about tourism, cooking, world news, personal travel experiences will be among topics exchanged with your group in French. This class duration is one and a half hour for week for 6 weeks. You are welcome to double-check your present level of French, if you feel necessary, by calling Patricia at 520 881 9158 for a phone placement test.

Course fee includes membership to the Alliance Française de Tucson.

A Taste of Mexico

Wednesdays, June 6 – 27, Noon – 1:30 pm


It introduces a delicious variety of short readings about a simple Mexican food/dish/place or tradition which will please your knowledge and you palate. Practice your Spanish reading comprehension, learn, discover something new and participate in a tribute to Mexican food and culture. This is a scrumptious, adventurous learning and tasting experience. All Spanish levels.

Spanish Cognates
Wednesdays, June 6 – 27, 1:45 – 3:15 pm


This workshop is for Beginners who want to learn lots of Spanish words in a fast and fun way. Cognates are words from two languages that are the same or similar. By learning many of these similar words, cognates, you can acquire an instant Spanish vocabulary of thousands of words. Correct Spanish pronunciation practice will be emphasized.

Basic Verb Workshop
Wednesdays, June 6 – 27, 3:30 – 5 pm


This workshop will focus exclusively on Basic Spanish verbs and conjugations. As you learn more Spanish and your vocabulary increases, you encounter the need to use more verbs. Each class will be dedicated to specific verb forms and written material will be available in each class in order to practice and improve your ability to use Spanish verbs correctly.

Análisis de Noticias y Novedades

Cuentos de Eva Luna y un repaso de gramática (Eva Luna Short Stories)

An anthology of 4 short stories by the renowned Chilean writer, Isabel Allende. These stories will be a guide to comprehension and include a concise review of key elements of grammar. There will be discussion questions before and after the reading as well as a specific grammatical review after each story.

Esta clase es para aquellos quienes ya saben y quieren practicar más español. Mejoraremos la pronunciación, redacción y formas de expresión. Low-Intermediate

Ready for something more challenging?  This class is on emphasis in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, through re-introducing the preterite, imperfect, future, as well as target vocabulary and situations.  Students will learn day to day conversation and improve the quality of their spoken Spanish. Knowledge and previous classes in Spanish required. This is a continuation of the current Beginners II class.

Emphasis will be on pronunciation, basic conversational phrases and losing your shyness. In this class we work around a central theme, integrating a specific subject of our everyday life. Come join us!

Advanced Intermediate

This course is for students who can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions in different every day topics. There will be an emphasis in conversation, reading and writing strengthened and expanded by more complex verb forms, including the present and past subjunctive, vocabulary and grammar. Students will be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without too much difficulty.

Course is conducted entirely in Spanish.

Beginners I

Designed for students with a little more experience and background in simple Spanish.  Practice what you have learned in previous courses and expand your vocabulary, grammar and ability to communicate. In this section we will put together some beginner readings in Spanish to help you practice what you have learned so far.  Previous knowledge: Ser/Estar, present tense of regular and irregular verbs.

Introduction to Spanish I

A continuation of Intro to Spanish for those students who have already been introduced to the structure and usage of nouns, verbs, simple sentences and the verbs “estar and ser”. Students will gain confidence in their ability to learn a second language; will be prepared for further Spanish language instruction by gaining sufficient every day vocabulary to form simple sentences.
