Balboa- Swing Dance Class
Balboa is a 1940’s swing dance that’s experiencing a modern revival! Glide to the Big Band classics with this smooth, elegant dance.  Rooted in the Jitterbug and Ballroom styles, this six week beginning progressive series will help you develop strong basics and musicality. No partner or experience required!

Bachata-Latin Dance
Bachata is a Latin dance from the Dominican Republic that encapsulates fun footwork and partner connection. This class is perfect for the new dancer that wants to have fun moving in a safe and supportive environment. Come alone or with a partner!

Collegiate Shag and Swing

Come jump, jive, and dance into the new year with this high-energy dance class guaranteed to get your blood pumping!Collegiate Shag is a swing dance done to boogie-woogie music and is the perfect addition to your New Year’s exercise routine. No partner or experience required!

Elder Rehab
This class is a research-tested physical, mental and social stimulation program, developed by psychologist, Sharon Arkin. A senior, memory-impaired participant will be partnered with a U of A volunteer “personal trainer” who will supervise the participant in physical fitness workouts and engage in memory and language stimulation.  Please contact Dr. Sharon Arkin for an application at arkinaz@earthlink.net or 520-603-2912

Fitness Center Youth Orientation
These 30-minute sessions provide an overview of proper use/operation of equipment focusing on safety along with proper etiquette prescribed for fitness centers in general. Each participant will receive a certification badge after completing their orientation to wear when using the fitness center and let staff know that the participant has completed training.

For registration come the 1st or 3rd Sunday at 12:30 each month. Space is limited to 6 people.

Healthy Back
Do you suffer from lower back pain or stiffness? Are you recovering from a lower back injury or simply trying to prevent one? Join Colin Easom, certified orthopedic exercise specialist and personal trainer, for this gentle small group exercise program that focuses on lower back health and core stability. Suitable for all ages and abilities.
Four 30-minute weekly sessions, a template to work on your own 2 additional days a week at The J and email/phone support throughout the program. Four consecutive weeks of progressions focusing on core strength and lower back stability/mobility. Non-members may use The J Fitness Center at no additional fee 2 additional days a week to perform template exercises during the program.

JXT Small Group Cross Training

Krav Maga
Krav Maga is the self-defense system of the Israeli military. Designed to build confidence, speed and reflexes, you can achieve a strong level of technical proficiency in a short period of time. Learn the basic survival techniques as taught to Israeli soldiers. This course is open to women and men with little or no self-defense experience.

“Survival Session” is a progressive course with a mixed level of students. Beginners will learn foundational movements to include blocks, punches and kicks. Intermediate level students will cover assault prevention and escape techniques. Advanced level practitioners will review abduction avoidance, weapons handling, improvised first aid and VIP protection. Since a majority of the course is physically active, proper attire is required: long pants, shirt with sleeves and sneakers.This course is open to women and men with little or no self-defense experience, ages 21 and older. 

“Escape Session” students will learn to hone their awareness and avoidance skills and evade dangerous situations. They will increase their perceptive abilities and foresee potential threats. Students will develop the de-escalation techniques needed to minimize aggressive situations. They will gain the knowledge to recognize and react to possible street assault setups, abduction attempts and potential terrorist threats. In this session, we will discuss topics relating to aggression, fear, violence and tactics to deal with each. This is a progressive course with a mixed level of students. Beginners will learn foundational movements to include blocks, punches and kicks. Intermediate level students will cover assault prevention and escape techniques. Advanced level practitioners will review improvised first aid, family protection and leadership under stress. All students will be challenged with reality based scenarios of potential confrontations at the end of each class. 

Lindy Hop Swing Dance
Lindy Hop is a fun way to get exercise while learning the fundamentals of partner dancing. This class is dedicated to educating beginning dancers in both six and eight count swing rhythms. By the end of this six-week series you’ll be jump, jiving, and swinging out! No partner or experience required.

Meditation
Each month explore a different mediation.  Experience the profound benefits of a regular meditation practice to increase happiness, slow aging, improve cardiovascular and immune systems, manage stress and anxiety, improve grey matter in the brain to improve concentration, clarity and acuity and find an overall sense of peace and ease.

Parent & Me Fitness

Ages 4-7, $100-$115/$75-$90 Member, Thursdays 5-5:45pm

Parent & Me Fitness is a brand new class designed to get parents and kids ages 4-7 on the track to good fitness! This class will help teach kids the importance of good fitness habits early, and by doing it with mom or dad, they’ll have a great example to follow. Learn basic fitness moves like stretches, sit-ups, and push-ups, as well as working with the ropes and balance balls, concentrating on proper form and technique. Get your kids off devices and TV and come get fit…together! Cost includes one child and one parent.

Purple Minion Youth Tri Club
This program helps kids develop their swimming, biking and running skills. Kids will learn how to transition between the sports, build confidence and learn the basic USA Triathlon rules and includes a nutritional program and strength training while learning safe and fun training habits.

PWR! Up for Parkinson’s Disease
This is a comprehensive neuroplasticity-principled program that integrates the latest research on Parkinson’s disease and rehabilitation, exercise and wellness. This type of research-based integrated exercise and wellness programming is necessary to counteract the inactivity, motor deterioration and symptoms of PD. This is a proactive program that allows you to optimize your brain change, brain repair and increase your desire to participate in everyday life.

As a person living with Parkinson’s Disease ( aka  a ” Parkie”),   I usually shuffled into the PWR! class at The J feeling tired, stiff and sore.  But  peppy instructor Mary Byrnes and fellow classmates warmly greeted me with gusto. Then, for an hour, energetic Mary  put us through the ” PWR ! Moves”, exercises and stretches  to improve our posture, weight shifting, trunk rotation and safe transiting.  We also did  breath ,voice, hand and eye exercises and stretches.. I left each class, feeling less stiff, tired and sore.  The class  made me feel more relaxed, happier and more in touch with my body.  I also enjoyed socializing with my fellow ” Parkies  ” As you learn to live with PD, you have got to be able to laugh with others about this often very difficult degenerative neurological disease.”

PWR! Up CARDIO for Parkinson’s Disease

This class is to help patients strengthen their cardio through a 50 min workout using bikes and treadmills. Discount for people currently registered in the PWR! Up for Parkinson’s Disease (this registration can be done at the Sports desk to receive discount).

Salsa- Dance Class
A Fun Way to Stay Fit! Learn beginning salsa through a progressive six-week series geared toward new dancers. Come alone or with a partner and be prepared to move!

Senior Swans with Ballet Tucson
Discover your “inner swan “in a ballet class geared for seniors! Gain flexibility, agility, coordination, stamina and grace as you explore the beauty of ballet. Ballet classes for seniors have been shown to keep the body nimble and improve overall posture and mobility. The structure of a ballet class with movement to music helps to increase mental stimulation and is a great way to stay physically active at any age. Most importantly you’ll have fun and enjoy the sense of well-being that dance can bring. Wear comfortable clothes. Lead by faculty from Ballet Tucson – Tucson’s Professional Ballet Company. No experience necessary.

Silver Sneakers Orientation
Just for our Silver Sneakers members, this 30-minute orientation provides an overview of proper use and operation of our equipment focusing on safety along with proper etiquette prescribed for fitness centers.

For registration just come in any Wednesday at 12pm and sign your name on our sign-in sheet at the Sports Desk.

Weightlifting for Women
Weight training improves bone density, develops lean muscle, increases metabolism, prevents osteoporosis and builds positive self image. This class will help you feel comfortable in the weight room and guide you through the fundamentals of weight training. Have fun learning the basics with trainer Patty Babel. who will teach you the safe and proper form for shaping each part of your body. Empower yourself by discovering your own strength and building the body you want.

Yoga for Healthy and Happy Back
Do you have back pain? Neck pain? Scoliosis? Don’t worry you are not alone, there is something you can do about. Even if you have had neck or back surgery this class is for you. Come join Jaimie Perkunas DPT, E-RYT for this 6 class series that will give you an opportunity to learn how to decompress your spine.
